Our History

Virginia Eye Institute, founded in 1976, is an association of board-certified ophthalmologists and optometrists who provide Virginias state-of-the-art comprehensive medical and surgical eye care as well as optical services.

In 1981, Virginia Eye Institute made medical history when Anthony D. Sakowski, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S. and Walter E. Bundy, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. performed Virginia’s first refractive surgery procedure.

In 1983, Virginia Eye Institute revolutionized ophthalmology in Virginia yet again when it began development of a free-standing outpatient ophthalmic ambulatory surgery center, the first of its kind in the state. This was followed shortly in 1985 by the groundbreaking of the Huguenot Bridge facility that was to become a new full-service eye care facility.

The following years brought substantial growth to Virginia Eye Institute, as the number of practicing ophthalmologists grew rapidly. This was highlighted by Richmond Retinal Associates joining Virginia Eye Institute in 2000 and Petersburg Eye Center joining Virginia Eye Institute in 2005.

In 2003, Virginia Eye Institute’s new free-standing Ambulatory Surgery Center opened at the Huguenot Bridge campus. The first surgery case was performed on January 26, 2003.

Today, our board-certified ophthalmologists and optometrists continue to provide Virginians with state-of-the-art comprehensive medical and surgical eye care as well as optical services.
