Why a contact lens prescription is different than an eyeglass prescription:
A contact lens prescription and an eyeglass prescription are not the same. An eyeglass prescription can not be used to make and fit contact lenses; and a contact lens prescription can not be used to make and fit eyeglasses.
The contact lens fitter will use the numbers from your eyeglass prescription as one of the pieces of information to properly fit you for contacts. Because the contact lenses actually touch the eye, additional measurements and evaluations are required to ensure a precise and healthy fit. The fitter must combine the information from the additional measurements and use optical mathematics to convert the eyeglass prescription to a contact lens prescription. This conversion allows you to deliver the same prescription to the patient even though the contact lens rests against the eye and the eyeglasses sit several millimeters away from the eye. The initial set of lenses dispensed to the patient will be based on these numbers. The patient must wear the lenses for a period of time and return for follow-up care. A healthy fit can not be determined until a fitter is able to evaluate the performance of the lens and the health of the eye under "real-life" conditions.
