LASIK & Refractive Surgery

Achieve Clear, Glasses-Free Vision with LASIK

Virginia Eye Institute (VEI) offers advanced LASIK and refractive surgery options to help you achieve sharper vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Our experienced surgeons use cutting-edge technology to provide customized treatments tailored to your unique vision needs.

What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular laser vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors such as:

  • Nearsightedness (Myopia)
  • Farsightedness (Hyperopia)
  • Astigmatism

Am I a Candidate for LASIK?

LASIK is an excellent option for many patients, but eligibility depends on several factors:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Your vision must be stable for at least one year.
  • You should have healthy corneas and no significant eye diseases.

Alternative Refractive Surgery Options

If LASIK isn’t the best fit for you, VEI offers other refractive surgery options, including:

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)

A great alternative for patients with thin corneas.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Ideal for patients with presbyopia or early cataracts.

Fast Recovery

Medication Implants (e.g. Durysta®)

Tiny biodegradable implants that slowly release medication over time, lowering eye pressure and reducing or eliminating the need for daily eye drops.

Advanced Technology: Featuring iDesign®

At Virginia Eye Institute, we use the iDesign® Refractive Studio — the most advanced LASIK technology available — to create a fully customized vision treatment for every patient.

Using wavefront-guided, topography-integrated mapping, iDesign® captures over 1,200 measurements of each eye to create a “visual fingerprint.” This allows our surgeons to see the tiniest imperfections in your vision and design a treatment plan tailored entirely to you — not an “off-the-shelf” solution.

This same NASA-inspired technology has been trusted for space optics and is now used to help deliver sharper, more precise LASIK results than ever before.

WHY IT MATTERS FOR YOU:

More Precision

A detailed map of your eye means more accurate treatment.

Better Outcomes

iDesign® allows for the highest level of customization.

Next-Level Safety

Integrates seamlessly with our state-of-the-art laser systems.

Important Reminder:

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is LASIK covered by insurance?
In most cases, no. LASIK is considered an elective procedure. However, the IRS considers LASIK as a qualified medical expense and can also be paid for using your qualified Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account.
What kind of anesthesia is used during LASIK?
Topical anesthesia (eyedrops) is typically used along with a mild oral sedation such as valium to help ensure the patient is relaxed and pain-free as much as possible.
What qualifies a LASIK candidate?
A very specific lasik evaluation is required to properly screen an individual’s qualification
(prescription strength and stability, corneal thickness, other eye problems, systemic autoimmune conditions, etc)
How long does LASIK surgery take?
The actual laser procedure is about 1 minute per eye, 20-30 minutes in the procedure room to ensure patient comfort, accuracy, etc. Expect to be at the surgery center about 2 hours total from check-in to discharge.
How long is the recovery time for LASIK procedure?
Recovery time will vary based on each individual.
Most resume daily activities (driving, reading, using digital devices) within 1-2 days.

Most are able to return to work in 1-2 days. But will need to avoid any activities that can result in the patient rubbing their surgery eye.
